I backed my trailer up to the trails area, and got Black Beauty out of the trailer. I wished I could have some friends around, but I guess I was just new and needed time. I had met a few people and really liked them, but I hadn't been able to really get to know them. I now had two horses, Black Beauty and Boss of the Plains. Black Beauty had been owned by someone who had quit, and I had adopted him. I got out his tack and groomed him, and then saddled and bridled him. I got him a few treats, and went through the basic paces with him. It was my first time on him, and most people would have stayed in an arena for their first ride on a new horse, but I felt that most horses were more comfortable out in the free open spaces. As soon as I was sure he wouldn't be any trouble, I started him down the trails at a slow walk incase anyone would want to join up with me. I was still in the open fields, and I started to canter Black Beauty just to the trees, to see how he did. He was such smooth riding I could hardly believe it. I felt like I was flying on him. I slowed him down as we got closer to the trees, talking to him to get him used to my voice.
