The gelding was rather calm today, from his usual crazy self. In the barn we tacked up, he was rather tired as he dozed off a few times. When the girth came he woke right up, and took his first fit of the day. He kicked out slightly and turned to nip me. With a smack he straightened out, and stopped making such a big fuss. He took the bit nicely, he had always been used in a snaffle because any harder would've made him more upset.
Lunging
After we were in the ring, I shut the gate. The arena was dusty from all the sweltering heat, but it wasn't as bad as it had been before at other places. We started at a nice, collected walk. The stirrups were dangling to get him more use to it. He had excellent movement, and carried himself nicely. When moving into the trot, he took off at a canter at first, then slowed to a trot as he took a poop (LOL). We worked on trotting collected, extended and both ways before we did a little canter work. He moved nicely, dropping his head a little to gain speed, but brought it back up when asked.
Riding
After the lounging was done, I decided a quick ride wouldn't kill anyone. I mounted up, and immediately he picked up a trot
"Easy"
I said as I brought him to a halt and dismounted. We had to work on this, I mounted up again and this time I had the reins back so he wouldn't move. Then after 10 seconds we picked up a nice walk. After 5 minutes of the walk both ways we picked up a trot, both ways. Today wasn't going to be his first day undersaddle cantering, I wanted to take him slowly.
